Elisabeth Sulser - Portrait Elisabeth Sulser, a native of Chur, Switzerland, studied early music from 1998 to 2003 at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis, where she concentrated on the recorder under Conrad Steinmann. She continued her recorder studies under Kees Boeke at the Zurich School of Music, Drama and Dance, receiving the school’s Performance Certificate in July 2007. Elisabeth Sulser plays in various chamber ensembles: notably in the Sulser-Grossmann Duo since 1995, and more recently in The Blarney Pilgrim: for in addition to medieval and baroque music, her broad interests extend to the virtuoso tin whistle and bagpipe of Irish folk music – a fascination that in recent years has seen her in demand for theatre productions and school projects.

She is currently at work on her first CD, slated for release in spring 2008, and also takes recorder students of her own.

Elisabeth Sulser was awarded the Friedl-Wald Foundation’s 2003 scholarship competition; in the same year, she won the Youth Prize of the Eliette von Karajan Cultural Fund; and in 2004 she received the Förderungspreis (prize for the encouragement of young talent) of the Canton of Grisons.

In 2004–05, Elisabeth Sulser participated in a neuro-psychological research project at the University of Zurich, where it was discovered that she possessed a rare form of synesthesia. This unusual neurological condition is described in greater detail in the “Synesthesia” section.
